JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.--The Carson-Newman men's tennis team outlasted the Milligan College Buffaloes by a final score of 5-4 in a 5 hour dual match on Saturday.
The deciding point of the match occurred at #6 singles as Daniel Douglas (Knoxville, Tenn.) defeated Collin Tugman of Milligan in a third set tiebreak by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.
"The tennis match was tightly contested from the start as the Eagles eked out two of the doubles matches to go up 2-1," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said.
The Eagles #2 doubles team of Juan Perez (Ecuador)/Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) secured the first doubles point with an 8-4 win over Lenoir/Jonsson of Milligan.
At #1 doubles, the team of Paul Birdsong (Woodstock, Ga.)/Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.) couldn't put away three match points as Milligan's Pullen/Bumann came away with a 9-7 victory.
Then C-N's Dalton Moore (Gate City, Va.)/Jon Allen (Lenoir City, Tenn.) held on for a 9-7 won over Fridell/Tugman of Milligan.
The singles matches began with the Eagles up by a score of 2-1.
Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.) earned C-N's third team point with a 6-1, 6-4 win at #2 singles.
Milligan came back to take victories at #1 and # 3 singles to tie the team match at 3-3, then Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) defeated Milligan's J. Lenoir at #4 singles by a score of 6-1,6-4 before Daniel Douglas (Knoxville, Tenn.) secured the victory for the Eagles.
The victory runs the Eagles 2012-2013 record to 2 – 0.
The match concluded the nonchampionship segment of the season. The Eagles will next take the court in February 22, 2013 at Alabama-Huntsville.
