Eagles fall at North Georgia, win streak brought to an end

WOODSTOCK, Ga. – Carson-Newman (5-9) saw its three-match winning streak come to an end at the Eagle Watch Neighborhood when it fell to no. 32 North Georgia (9-7) Wednesday afternoon 8-1.

Freshman Jonathan Allen (Lenoir City, Tenn.) brought in the solitary point for the Eagles beating Mario Mesquita 6-1, 6-3 at no. 5 singles. He has now won six consecutive singles matches. 

Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) came close to a victory at no. 4 singles, but was ultimately unsuccessful concluding the match with a decision of 6-4, 7-5 to Sam Gantt. In the no. 2 spot, Paul Birdsong (Woodstock, Ga.) also neared a win but lost to Matheus Guida 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play, the team of Birdsong and Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.) performed well in the no. 2 spot but fell after a tiebreaker 9-8 (3) to the pair of Gantt and Giovani Santos.

At no. 3 doubles, Allen and Curt Duncan (Morristown, Tenn.) dropped a close match to Mesquita and Andy McMaster 8-5.

The Eagles resume conference play at Tusculum on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
