Eagles pick up first win of spring semester

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – Carson-Newman (3-8) handily beat North Greenville University (1-9) with a final decision of 8-1 to snap an eight-match losing streak.

At no. 5 singles, Dalton Moore (Gate City, Va.) triumphed over James Klempin 6-2, 6-1. Jonathan Allen (Lenoir City, Tenn.) brought in a 6-2, 6-3 win against Sergio Araujo in no. 4 singles. In the no. 3 spot, Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) won 6-2, 6-2 versus Juan Vargas.

Derek Holdway (Woodstock, Ga.) proved victorious after a second set tiebreaker against Guilherme Ferreira at no. 2 singles finalizing 6-4, 7-6 (10-5).

At no. 1 singles, Juan Perez (Ecuador) defeated Hugo Ciarrocchi in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Daniel Douglas (Knoxville, Tenn.) performed well in the no. 6 spot prevailing over John Melson after a third set tiebreaker 7-5, 2-6, 10-5.

In doubles play, the team of Perez and Mackay teamed up against Vargas and Ciarrocchi at the no. 1 spot resulting in an 8-3 win for the Eagles. Moore and Douglas proved successful in the no. 3 spot resulting 8-3 against Klempin and Melson.

The team of Holdway and Allen came close to a victory but fell in the no. 2 doubles position 8-6 to Araujo and Ferreira.

The Eagles compete at Covenant on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
