Eagles Remain Unbeaten After a Pair of Home Opening Victories

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman beach volleyball (17-0) extends its unbeaten streak after defeating Erskine (1-3) and Division-I Morehead St (4-2) on Saturday, Mar. 11th.

Carson-Newman's sweep over Erskine marks their sixth sweep in a row and their 12th of the year. Before this season, the Eagles had only recorded seven sweeps in a single season (2016, 2022).

Julia Wheeler and McKenna Hall began the day with a matchup against Sam Bebber and Kylie McKean in the four spot. The Eagles won their 16th matchup of the season after 21-15 and 21-18 sets against Erskine's duo.

Piper Halcrow and Jenny Ille played in a tightly contested matchup against the Fleet's Allie Carter and Maisy Garner. The Eagles dropped the first set 21-19 but were able to rally to win the second set 21-16. The Eagles won the tiebreaker 15-12 in one of the season's most competitive matchups.

Ava Fountain and Abbey Hildenbrand continued their dominance in the two spot, picking up their 16th win of the season when they lined up against Karina Petrovich and Alyssa Pagan. The Eagles won in consecutive 21-11 sets.

Truth Hafey and Sierra Still won their 14th matchup of the season when they lined up against sisters Olivia Browne and Morgan Browne. The Eagles duo won in sets of 21-12 and 21-9 to earn Carson-Newman's fourth point of the day.

Mia Toribio and Taylor Keeran clinched the sweep over the Fleet with a three-set victory over Erskine. The Eagles dropped the first set 23-21, but they came back in the second to win 23-21. The Eagles took the tiebreaker 15-12 in one of the most competitive matchups of the season so far.

Calla Shotwell and Kenzie Palmer played in an exhibition match against Laney Gaston and Alison Dutterer. The Eagles lost in sets of 21-15 and 21-8.

C-N 4, Morehead St. 1

Carson-Newman's win over Morehead State marks their third win over a D-I opponent so far this season. The Eagles earned their other two wins over Tennessee Tech.

Wheeler and Hall remained in the four spot for the second matchup of the day. The duo extended their perfect record to 17-0 after defeating Peighton Isley and Peyton Kennedy in sets of 23-21 and 24-22. Hall and Wheeler are 9-0 when playing in the four spot, and move into second in school history for wins in a season. Morgan Siwiec holds the record for her 20-9 season last year.

Ille and Halcrow took on Brenna Bommer and Andrea Grimes in the five spot. The Eagles duo dropped the first set 21-16 but were able to rally in the second to win 21-14. Carson-Newman's duo carried the momentum into the third, where they won 15-7. Ille and Halcrow are 7-0 this season.

Hildenbrand and Fountain won their 17th matchup of the year when they took on Irene Wogenstahl and Bridget Bessler in the two spot. Carson-Newman's duo won in sets of 21-18 and 21-13 to tie Wheeler and Hall for the second-most wins in a season with 17.

Hafey and Still played in the final matchup of the day when they lined up against Sydney Wyman and Trinity Miller. The Eagles won the first set 28-26 in what has been the longest set of the season so far. The pair went on to win the second set 21-18. Hafey and Still climbed to 15-2 in the one spot this season.

Toribio and Keeran dropped their matchup against Abby Hulsman and Anya Reinhard. The Morehead St. duo won in sets of 21-13 and 21-8 to hand Toribio/Keeran their second loss of the year.

Carson-Newman will return to action after a ten-day hiatus on Mar. 21st for senior night action on the banks of Mossy Creek for a doubleheader against St. Andrews beginning at noon. The Eagles have already defeated St. Andrews twice this season.
