JEFFERSON CITY, TN – Senior Mary Northcutt (Huntsville, Ala.) of the Carson-Newman swim team was honored as the female swimmer of the week by the Bluegrass Mountain Conference for the week of Sept. 30th to Oct. 6th, 2019.
The award was bestowed upon Northcutt after she led the women's side of the swim team to a dominant win at the King Invitational in Bristol, Tennessee over the weekend. The women piled up 1,169 points while the second-place Catawba College Indians scored 545.5.
"We used King to go in and practice race strategies and put to test some of the work we've been doing," Northcutt said. "We had a good idea that we would go in and dominate like we did."
As a whole, the Eagles won 32 out of 36 events including every relay event on their way to putting up 2,254 points, twice as many as any of the other nine programs that competed.
Fellow senior Caleb Howell (Easley, S.C.) won the male equivalent of the award as well.
"I think it kind of sets a good note for the beginning of the year, having our team receive both the male and female award" Northcutt said. "It doesn't change the fact that we still have to get in the water tomorrow and work hard with the rest of our teammates."
Northcutt secured first in the 100-yard backstroke on the opening day of the event and won the 50-yard freestyle on both days. She also swam as a part of five separate winning relay teams.
It was the first time Northcutt has received the honor.
"It was totally unexpected," Northcutt said. "I kind of forgot the award existed but it feels good to go in and work hard and have something to show for that."
Northcutt and the rest of the Eagles will next suit up in a dual-meet against Wingate University in Wingate, North Carolina on Oct. 18th and 19th.
