Swimming’s Northcutt presented with BMI Postgraduate Scholarship

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Carson-Newman swimming alumna Mary Northcutt (Huntsville, Ala.) has been presented the inaugural Bob McCloskey Insurance Postgraduate Scholarship by the South Atlantic Conference, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.

The exercise science major graduated from Carson-Newman with a 4.0. She will apply the postgraduate scholarship to her studies at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga as she pursues a doctorate in physical therapy.

Northcutt's extracurriculars have been above board in her time at Carson-Newman.  She is a student-athlete representative on the NCAA's CoVID-19 task force and has represented Carson-Newman and the SAC as a member of the NCAA's national Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

"I am really honored to be receiving the SAC postgraduate scholarship," Northcutt said. "The South Atlantic Conference and Carson-Newman have both given me so much as a student-athlete, and I hope to make them proud as I move into this new phase of life at Physical Therapy school."

In the pool, Northcutt is a six-time All-American and a three-time honorable mention All-American.  She earned All-America honors as a member of Carson-Newman's 200 free relay all four years of her collegiate career.

She capped her time at Mossy Creek with All-America swims as a member of the 200 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.  She has a chance to become the first three-time academic All-American in Carson-Newman athletics history pending the outcome of this year's voting.

"I cannot think of anyone more deserving," Carson-Newman head swim coach Jordan Taylor said. "She possesses everything a coach could ask for in a student-athlete. She is hard-working, driven, teachable, motivated, committed, polite, punctual, team-oriented, and the list goes on. She has achieved so much over the last four years both in and out of the water, she has raised the bar for this program. The team and I will miss her so much as she moves onto a new chapter in her life, but we will continue to be there cheering her on and supporting her as she tackles physical therapy school. I am delighted that she has been selected for this honor."

The BMI postgraduate scholarships are awarded to SAC student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and have completed their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. Both Northcutt and Wingate football player Andrew Strickland will receive a one-time, non-renewable scholarship of $2,000 toward the graduate school of their choice.
