Eagles End Season on High Note at Day Two Prelims

Thursday Prelim Results

GENEVA, OH. – The Carson-Newman swim team saw stellar results in the preliminaries of day two of the NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championships.

The event served as the final competitive swims of the year for the Eagles as the NCAA canceled the remaining portions of the National Championships over health concerns related to the spread of COVID-19.

The day started with the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Manon Compagner (Balkbrug, Netherlands), Laurel Sankowski (Indian Trail, N.C.), Meredith Ginn (Ocala, Fla.) and Mary Northcutt (Huntsville, Ala.) securing seventh place in the prelims, which would have landed them in the 'A' final later on in the evening. They finished in a time of 1:33.67.

The men's 200-yard freestyle squad of Roberts Zemturis (Ventspils, Kerzeme), Andrei Ungur (Romania), Raphael de Paiva (Sao Paolo, Brazil) and Chad Andoljsek (Slovenia) took sixth in the prelims, securing them a spot in the 'A' final as well. The team finished the race in 1:19.94.

Junior CJ Jensen (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Ginn both qualified for the 'B' final in the 400-yard individual medley, finishing 11th and 13th, respectively.

Compagner also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.27, easily landing her in the finals.

In the men's 200-yard freestyle, Matt George (Manchester, England) placed 11th in a time of 1:37.76, good enough for the 'B' final later on in the day.

The relay team of Ruth Hullette (Newton, N.C.), Kailee Morgan (Greeneville, S.C.), Compagner and Northcutt took third in the 400-yard medley relay in 3:41.41. The squad would have been yet another group in an 'A' final for the Eagles.

The men's 400-yard medley relay team took fourth in 3:12.50 and would have been in the 'A' final as well. That team consisted of Ungur, Howell, Andoljsek and Ivo Kunzle (Asuncion, Paraguay).

Senior Caleb Howell was disqualified from the 400-yard individual medley after it was deemed he committed a false start at the beginning of the race.

When all was said and done at the prelims of day two, C-N ranked 12th on the men's side and 13th on the women's side.

C-N's 2019-2020 season has come to an end as a result of the cancellation of the National Championships due to health concerns about COVID-19.
