ATLANTA, Ga. – The Carson-Newman swim team finished in third place on both the men's and women's sides at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Eagles finished behind both Emory University and Wingate, posting 429.5 points on the men's side while putting up 422 on the women's end.
Senior Caleb Howell (Easley, S.C.) won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:04.15. He also took second in the 400 yard individual medley at 4:03.84.
"Very pleased with Caleb's swims today," Carson-Newman coach Jordan Taylor said. "Winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a season's best time was great and placed him fifth in the country. But I was equally impressed with his swim in the 400 IM. A big season-best and placed him ninth in the country."
This came just one day after Howell took home first place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:51.61, the best time of any swimmer in all of Division II this season.
On the women's side, senior Mary Northcutt (Huntsville, Ala.) won the 50-yard freestyle in 24:06.
"She brushed up on a few things from the Friday sessions and executed a great race," Taylor said. "A duel-meet college best time and getting very close to her lifetime best."
Overall, Emory took first on both sides and Wingate took second. C-N, ranked 22nd on the men's side and 20th on the women's, achieved what they set out to do, focusing less on final team scores and instead putting the emphasis on setting season-best times and improving as a team.
"We evaluate and learn from the swims this weekend and rest up over the next two weeks leading into the Tennessee Invites and we will be ready to go," Taylor said. "This weekend we achieved everything I was hoping. We built great momentum and made some big steps forward. This team will be ready for the Tennessee Invite and there will be plenty of fast swimming."
The team next hosts Lees-McRae in a dual-meet at home in Jefferson City, Tennessee on Nov. 16th at 1 p.m.
