Headrick, McKenna lead way as Eagles place second in State Farm Intercollegiate

TAZEWELL, Tenn – On the final day of the State Farm Intercollegiate, the 21st ranked Carson-Newman men's golf team moved up one spot on the leaderboard after shooting a plus-seven, 292 for the day, finishing the event in second place.

"We had a solid round today to move into second place," Golf Coach Randy Wylie said. "Our high score that counted was a 74, that's what we're looking for. We would've needed to go really low to win the tournament, and even though we couldn't muster that, I was proud of the way our guys competed."

Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.), who posted the team's best score in the first two rounds, shot a two-over 74 for the day. He finished with a 54-hole mark of two-under, tying him for sixth, the third top ten finish in his career.

Three strokes behind Headrick was senior Dalton Reese (Warrenton, Ga.), who carded a 73 in his final 18 holes. His two day total of one-over par tied him for 14th.

Fintan McKenna (Westhill, UK) had his best 54 holes as an Eagle and left Tazewell having tied for 23rd. McKenna's final round was the best Carson-Newman had to offer and his even-par 72 was his best round of the fall so far. His overall score for the event was six-over.

Alex Hutson (Newport, Tenn.) concluded his first collegiate action this autumn with a 76, giving him a plus-seven for the tournament and tying him for 25th. One stroke behind Hutson was Tom Forster (Oundle, England), who shot a 73, his best score of the tournament, completing the competition tied for 27th.

Grant Bodie (Knoxville, Tenn.), Justin Vittitoe (Dandridge, Tenn,) and Will Hurt (Powell, Tenn.) were also playing in the intercollegiate as individuals, meaning their scores didn't count towards theoverall team total. Bodie tied for 62nd, Vittitoe wrapped up in 75th and Hurt placed 78th.

Weston Bell from Anderson (S.C.) topped the individual leaderboard at six-under, while the event's host school, Lincoln Memorial, won the team competition with a score of minus-seven.

Carson-Newman will be on the golf course one more time this fall, as they travel to Orlando to play in the McDonough Cup on Oct. 31st and Nov. 1st
