Newberry tops Carson-Newman in dual match

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – Playing in their only dual match of the season, the Carson-Newman women's golf team fell to the Newberry Wolves, 6-4, at Cobblestone Park Golf Club in Blythewood, S.C. on Saturday afternoon.

The match was decided using both match play and medal play scoring. Golfers from each team were paired up and each side picked up a point if their student-athlete won more holes during the round and also if their player finished with a better overall score that their competitor.

"I thought we did well for a course we hadn't seen before," women's golf coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "All three rookies did well. Allie [Fletcher] (Cumming, Ga.) lost by just one stroke. We won the previous two matches with Newberry and it was about time they won one. For us, it was a good practice round getting ready for Converse on Monday."

C-N's four points came from victories by Jessica Hart (Roanoke, Va.) and Katie Medley (Cleveland, Tenn.). Hart shot a 78, beating Newberry's Annabelle Dallery by five strokes. The senior collected ten pars on the day and finished her round by birdieing the 18th.

Competing in her first event for Carson-Newman, Medley cruised past Kate Spaid and entered the clubhouse with an 84. She earned a match play victory by winning nine of the first 10 holes, including the ninth, which she birdied. Spaid withdrew following the 10th.

"[Katie] did really well," Strudwick said. "She just seemed so ready to compete today. I was really pleased. Jessica continues her good form after her finish at Kiawah, which is what we really need."

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Nabila Inak, Johana Lunackova and Taylor Lance each picked up two points for the Wolves, helping guide their team to victory. Inak defeated Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) by three shots and Lunackova topped Fletcher by carding a par on 18, just one hole after Fletcher evened the match with a birdie on 17. Lance's 76 put her eight strokes ahead of Rachel Watts (Newport, Tenn.).

Coach Strudwick and her team have just one day off before they are back in action at the Converse Spring Invite, which will take place on Monday and Tuesday at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C. For a recap and results of that tournament, visit cneagles.com.
