England tied for tenth after first round at Converse

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) is tied for tenth after shooting a six-over 78, leading the Carson-Newman women's golf team into ninth place with a score of +40 in round one at the Converse Spring Invite by Founders FCU at the Carolina County Club in Spartanburg, S.C. on Monday.

"The team played a little flat today," women's golf coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "Everyone had to work really hard for their score. I know we can do better tomorrow. I'm really pleased with continuing good play from Jessica Hart (Roanoke, Va.) and now Katie Medley (Cleveland, Tenn.) in her first event."

England is just five strokes behind the leader through 18 holes and is seeking her fourth top 15 finish of the year. She'll be looking to move up the leaderboard in Tuesday's final round.

Just two strokes behind her teammate is Hart, with C-N's second-best mark of day one. The senior's score of 80 is good enough to place her in a tie for 27th. For Hart, this was her third consecutive round of 80 or better.

Taylor Hayes (Lake Ozark, Mo.) and Allie Fletcher (Cumming, Ga.) tied for Carson-Newman's third score, as they both posted 13-over 85's. They are currently even with a number of other players for 52nd. One of the players they are tied with is Medley, who is participating in her first collegiate tournament, playing as an individual.

Freshman Rachel Watts (Newport, Tenn.) is three strokes behind her teammates after shooting 16-over, tying her for 66th.

King (Tenn.) University owns the top spot through 18 holes at 27-over, one shot ahead of Lincoln Memorial and three ahead of Converse's 'A' team. Lenoir-Rhyne is in fourth, five strokes off the lead and Coker and Tusculum are six behind.

Converse's Marley Felthousen has a score of +1, which places her at the top of the individual leaderboard. Three players, King's Daphne Chang, LMU's Reagan Greene and Trevecca Nazarene's Alexa Rippy are tied for second place, two shots back.
