Eagles Take On Bearcats in Third Matchup of the Season

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman's women's tennis team heads to Young Harris, Ga., to face off against Young Harris College on Sunday, Feb. 19th. The Eagles will look to avoid their first 0-3 start to a season since the 2017 season when the Eagles finished 8-10.

"The last few matches have been full of ups and downs. We had a few close matches that could have changed some of the results," head coach Felipe Charry said.

The Eagles began the season with a 6-1 loss to the #10 ranked North Georgia University. The Eagles ventured to Greenwood S.C. a week later to compete against Lander University. The Eagles competed well against the Bearcats but lost 4-3. Natasha Forrest, Anita Chornei, and Julia Speiser were the winning Eagles of the day. Carson-Newman lost each of the three doubles matches.

"We lost too many chances in doubles against Lander and North Georgia. We need to work a lot more on doubles," Charry said.

Carson-Newman has only won a single doubles set so far this season. The victory came against North Georgia when Natasha Forrest and Summer Reeves won 7-5, playing in the one spot for the Eagles.

Young Harris finished last season with a record of 6-14. The Bearcats had not had a winning season since the 2017-18 season when they finished 12-6, including a 5-4 win over Carson-Newman.

The Bearcats began the spring season with a 4-3 loss to Mars Hill. They followed up that performance with a 7-0 loss to the Tusculum Pioneers. Young Harris then traveled to Harrogate, Tenn., to match up against Lincoln Memorial University. The Bearcats lost 4-3. They went on to compete against Western Carolina. The Bearcats lost 5-2.

Carson-Newman will look to make it six straight losses to start the season for Young Harris, including their third to an SAC team. The Eagles won their matchup against Young Harris last year in a 7-0 thrashing featuring three doubles victories.

"We knew the first few games were against strong opponents, so we just need to keep our heads up and be patient with the results," Charry said.

Carson-Newman will begin with doubles action at 2:00 P.M. against the Bearcats.
