JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Two teams that made NCAA Tournament regional appearances in 2024 visit Carson-Newman (4-0) in a unique weekend at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex, starting tomorrow afternoon.
Originally, C-N was scheduled to play as host to the University of Charleston for a three-game series. Now, the Eagles will just play a doubleheader with the Golden Eagles starting tomorrow at noon and then one game Saturday versus Trevecca Nazarene. TNU will make the trip to Mossy Creek on Saturday and play UC at 11:30 a.m. and then C-N at 2:30 p.m.
This will be UC's second trip to the banks of Mossy Creek. The Eagles took two of three in a series with the Golden Eagles back in 2022. Saturday's meeting between C-N and TNU will be the Trojans' third straight trip to Jefferson City in this series. The last three games in the seven-game series history have been decided by ten runs or more. C-N leads the series all-time with the Trojans 4-3.
Carson-Newman's offense continues to be red hot to start the 2025 season. The Eagles have scored 51 runs through the first four games of the season, all while holding their opponents to just 13 runs to post a 3.38 ERA. It's the most runs scored through the first four games of a season in program history. C-N has the fifth-most runs scored in the country and average just shy of 13 per game so far this season.
The Eagles have started a season 4-0 for just the fourth time since 1990, all of which have been under head coach Tom Griffin. Carson-Newman is one of just three South Atlantic Conference schools and 23 in DII that have started the season and are still unbeaten. Three wins this weekend can match the program's 7-0 start in 2020.
In C-N's 18-run performance against Shorter on Tuesday, Tanner Kilgore (Kingsport, Tenn.) finished with his first career multi-home run game, with two long balls and a career high five RBI. He is top 20 nationally with two home runs and nine RBI through four games. Reigning SAC Player of the Week Nicholas Castellana (Lancaster, N.Y) continued his hot start at the dish going three for four on Tuesday. He is hitting .714 at the plate and reaching base 75 percent of the time in four games.
University of Charleston, the reigning Mountain East Conference tournament champions, was picked to finish first in the South division in this season's preseason poll. The Golden Eagles are coming off their winningest season in program history, posting an impressive 44-10 overall mark. UC bowed out after three games in the Atlantic regional.
UC enters this season tied for the second-longest active road winning streak in DII, winning its final seven road games of 2024. They went 20-2 on the road and won 20 of their final 21 after dropping the road and season opener to Wingate last season.
The top hitter and pitcher return for the Golden Eagles this season. Utilityman Casey Finck hit a team-best .420 at the plate and finished with a team-high 68 hits and 48 RBI. As a freshman, Trace Hartman was the team's best pitcher, going 6-0 in ten starts while posting a 1.78 ERA. UC does lose its top two relievers who had sub 2 earned run averages, they do return Jimmy Breen who went 4-0 and had a 2.60 ERA in 27 innings.
Just like the University of Charleston, Trevecca Nazarene is also coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2024. The Trojans won their fifth and final Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament last season, before seeing their season end in three games in the Midwest regional.
This season, TNU now makes the move to the Gulf South Conference where it was picked to finish seventh in the league's preseason coaches' poll.
The Trojans got swept in their opening-weekend series against Lenoir-Rhyne and got outscored 35 to 12 in the three losses. They got right on Tuesday, winning a midweek battle with Lane 14-3.
Joey Parliment and Noah Boughton have drove in half of the team's runs through four games, each with six RBI. Parliment is eight for 14 at the plate to start the season.
First pitch for the doubleheader tomorrow is set for 12:00 p.m. from the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex. All games will air with a video stream available on FloSports with a subscription. There will also be a free audio stream available courtesy of the Eagle Sports Network on cneagles.com/live.
