JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – No. 17 Carson-Newman (33-14, 19-8 SAC) will honor 16 seniors this weekend as it concludes the regular season playing host to Mars Hill (13-34, 6-21 SAC) for a three-game series starting Friday at 11:00 a.m.
After spending much of the conference season in first or second, C-N finds itself in third place, heading into the final weekend series of the season. To be the second seed and host one of the opening weekend brackets, the Eagles need to have a better record in the final weekend series of the year than second-place Lenoir-Rhyne. C-N would not be able to move up to second place unless Lenoir-Rhyne loses at least one game to Anderson this weekend. Carson-Newman still has an outside chance to own a share of the SAC regular season title. C-N would need to sweep the MHU and then hope Catawba is swept by Lincoln Memorial and Lenoir-Rhyne loses at least once to Anderson. The program has just five SAC regular season titles, with the last one coming in 2003. Regardless of results, C-N can not finish any lower than its current positioning.
Carson-Newman's 19 wins in South Atlantic Conference play this season are tied for the most in program history. The Eagles have won 70 percent of their league games this season. One win this weekend will be C-N's most wins in a conference season since joining the SAC and three wins will make it the highest winning percentage in a conference season as well.
The Eagles will aim to continue their winningest season since 2008. The program's 32 wins this season are the most in a season since 2008 and the fourth most in a season under Griffin. A sweep of MHU this weekend would match the program's second most wins in a season under Griffin.
Carson-Newman pitching has held opposing offenses to two runs or less 20 times this season. It's the second-most occurrences of holding an opponent to two runs or less in the Tom Griffin era. During the 2008 season, Carson-Newman baseball's winning season in DII, C-N held opponents to two runs or less 22 times throughout that season that featured a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Christian Henderson (Clarksville, Tenn.) increased that total on Tuesday afternoon, firing his first career complete game. He becomes just the sixth Eagles pitcher to toss a midweek complete game over the last 25 years.
Logan Floyd (Adairsville, Ga.) is having another impressive season at the plate. He has hit safely in 17 straight games, the longest hitting streak since Jordan's Griffin's 18 game mark in 2022. Floyd leads the Eagles in batting average (.382), hits (65) and runs batted in (47).
When C-N and MHU take the field for game one of the series, it will mark the series' 100th all-time meeting. Carson-Newman leads the series 65-34 and has won eight of the past nine matchups.
Mars Hill heads to Mossy Creek for its final three games of the season having lost five of its last six games. The Lions are 13-34 overall this year and are last in the SAC with just a 6-21 record. They have lost 10 of their last 12 conference games with their only series win coming versus Newberry back in mid-March.
On the road this season, head coach Zach Honeycutt's team has a 6-17 record with losses in six of their last seven away games. MHU has lost as many as six straight road games this year.
Inconsistency has plagued the Lions in 2025. They have scored as many as 17 runs in a game this season, but average just 5.3 runs per game. One may think that scoring double digit runs would result in more wins than not, but that is not the case for this year's MHU team. The Lions have scored ten or more runs eight different times but are just 4-4 in those games. Their two highest scoring efforts of the season were both losses, 22-17 to King and 18-16 to Concord.
MHU's offense has a team batting average of .281 for the season, ranking 11th in the league. Extra base hits have been key, ranking fourth in both doubles and home runs in 2025. Jackson Jones leads MHU with 13 doubles while three other hitters tie for the team lead with eight home runs.
Brennan Williams' win loss record is not indicative for how he has pitched this year. He is just 4-6 but leads DII with seven complete games in 11 starts. He had five straight complete games before his last two starts in which he has allowed at least seven runs.
The three-game weekend series is scheduled to begin on tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. All games will air with a video stream available on FloSports with a subscription. There will also be a free audio stream available courtesy of the Eagle Sports Network on cneagles.com/live.
