INDIANAPOLIS- In the first edition of the NCAA's baseball region rankings, No. 17 Carson-Newman (33-14) found itself listed amongst ten teams in alphabetical order in the Southeast Region as announced by the NCAA on Wednesday evening.
Carson-Newman is one of four South Atlantic Conference schools listed in the region rankings, joined by Catawba, Coker, and Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Peach Belt is represented by just one school, North Georgia. Conference Carolinas makes up the other five teams ranked in the region. Belmont Abbey, Mount Olive, North Greenville, UNC Pembroke and Young Harris
Among the teams listed under consideration, C-N has played ten games against those teams and is 4-6.
The Eagles are tied for the fourth-best RPI at .573 with Young Harris. C-N has played the sixth toughest schedule in the Southeast region and is 30-14 in those contests. Based on the DII performance indicator, Carson-Newman ranks fourth-best in the region.
The selection committee uses these rankings as a guideline to make up the NCAA Tournament field. The top eight teams in the region make the NCAA Tournament with three automatic bids going to the winners of the conference tournaments from the South Atlantic Conference, Conference Carolinas and the Peach Belt Conference.
