Hay leads, Eagles tied for third through first round at Rendleman Invite

SALISBURY, NC – Carson-Newman's Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) fired a 3-under 68 and leads through the first round of the Richard Rendleman Invitational, played Monday in Salisbury, N.C.

Catawba College is hosting the event at the 6,665-yard, Par-71 Country Club of Salisbury. The 36-hole tournament will conclude on Tuesday.

Hay shot identical 34's on both sides to finish with a 68. He leads Jordan Walor, of UNC Pembroke, and Joe McGeean, of Findlay, by a single shot. Newberry's Matthew Campbell also posted a round under par and is fourth after his 70.

In team scores, UNC-Pembroke and Queens share the lead following Monday's first round. Both fired a first-day 292 to lead by three shots over Belmont Abbey and Carson-Newman. Pfeiffer and Newberry are in a tie for fifth with a score of 296.

Junior Liam Ashby (Dublin, Ireland) and senior John Minor Jr. (Dandridge, Tenn.) are both tied for 24th after each shot 75 today. Minor recovered from a 40 on the front to shoot 35 on the back nine.

Freshman Jonathan Kim-Moss (Mississauga, Canada) cared the fourth Eagle score of the day with a 6-over 77. He is tied for 43rd.
