Hay tied for eighth after first round of NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional

DELAND, Fla. — Carson-Newman sophomore Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) fired a 1-under-par 71 on Monday to tie for eighth place after the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional men's golf tournament at Victoria Hills Golf Club.

Hay is four shots off the lead, as Lynn's Ricardo Gouveia and Belmont Abbey's Peter Tarver Jones both shot 5-under-par 67s to move atop the leaderboard. Hay overcame a 2-over-par front nine by recording four birdies and a bogey on the back nine to finish the day under par.

Eagles junior Liam Ashby (Dublin, Ireland) turned in a 76 (+4) to wrap up his round in a tie for 60th.

West Florida leads the tournament after shooting a 3-under-par 285, followed by Lynn (288), Newberry College (289), Belmont Abbey (291) and Delta State (293).

The top five teams and top two student-athletes not with one of those five teams (regardless of region) advance to the National Tournament on May 16-20 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals in Florence, Ala. Twenty teams are participating in the Super Regional.

The second round of the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional will be held on Tuesday.
