Hay, Ashby wrap up competition at 2011 South/Southeast Regional

DELAND, Fla. — Carson-Newman sophomore Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) came up short in qualifying for next week's NCAA Championships with an 84 in Wednesday's final round at the 2011 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional men's golf tournament at Victoria Hills Golf Club.

Hay finishes the tournament in a tie for 62nd with a three-round 228 (+12), while fellow Eagle Liam Ashby (Dublin, Ireland) finished in 72nd after carding a 76 (+4) on Wednesday.

Hay made the turn at 39 after making birdie on the 17th hole to try to turn his round in the right direction, but struggled to a 45 (+9) on the back nine.

Ashby turned in his second 76 of the tournament after a 1-over 37 on the front. He birdied the 13th and 15th holes on the front. He finished the tournament with a 14-over 230.

Both Ashby and Hay return next season, along with South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year Jonathan Kim-Moss, to give C-N a solid core group of returners.

Lynn University won the team tournament overall. Barry University, Barton College, Newberry College, and Columbus State University all qualified for next week's NCAA Championships in Florence, Ala.
