Carson-Newman's Hay, Ashby qualify for NCAA Southeast Regional tournament

INDIANAPOLIS — Carson-Newman sophomore Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) and junior Liam Ashby (Dublin, Ireland) have qualified to play as individuals in the 2011 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional men's golf tournament, the NCAA announced Monday.

The South and Southeast Regional tournaments take place simultaneously on May 2-4 at Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand, Fla.

Hay recently finished in a tie for seventh at the South Atlantic Conference Championship, while Ashby finished in ninth place. Both Hay and Ashby received first team All-SAC honors this season.

Hay, whose scoring average of 73.6 ranked seventh in the SAC, had two top five finish on the season, including second place showings in the Richard Rendleman Invitational and the Bearcat Golf Classic.

Ashby's strokes per round average of 73.4 ranked fourth in the conference. He had three top five finishes on the season, including a second place finish in the Will Wilson Invitational in the fall.

The top five teams and top two student-athletes not with one of those five teams (regardless of region) advance to the National Tournament on May 16-20 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals in Florence, Ala. Twenty teams are participating in the Super Regional.
