GREENVILLE, S.C. – Carson-Newman women's golf is tied for 6th following a competitive first round of the SAC Championships, using a pair of top 20 rounds to work into a good position ahead of the final two rounds.
The Eagles sit five strokes behind fifth-place Limestone and nine strokes behind fourth-place Catawba.
Madison Cline led C-N on day one, delivering a 73-stroke first round to finish the day tied for 11th at 1-over. Cline started her day with five straight pars and carded two birdies to overcome a pair of late bogeys to enter the back nine at even-par. Despite a bogey in the middle of the back nine, she stroked the other eight holes at par to finish the round at 1-over.
Emery Fisher is tied for 19th after day one, carding a 75-stroke first round to finish the day at 3-over. The sophomore was consistent on the front nine, stroking eight pars before a birdie on hole nine, entering the back nine at 1-under. Fisher added four strokes on three holes over par, including a double bogey, but carded the other six holes at par to end the day at 3-over.
Ida Petersen checks in at 23rd following a 76-stroke first round, ending the day at 4-over. Petersen carded a pair of bogeys on the front nine but stroked seven pars, including a stretch of six-consecutive to enter the back nine at 2-over. She had another pair of bogeys on the back nine but also notched seven pars to end the day at 4-over.
Sydney Thomas finished the day at 8-over, tying for 34th after the opening round. Thomas had five holes over par on the front nine, including a triple bogey, entering the back nine at 8-over. However, she settled in nicely on the day's final stretch, carding all nine holes on the back nine at par to finish the round at 8-over.
Anaelle Picot slides in at 36th, shooting an 81 in round one to finish the day at 9-over. Picot carded four holes over par on the front nine, including two double bogeys, but shot five pars to enter the back nine at 6-over. Picot had four holes over par on the back nine, but two late birdies limited the damage, ending her day at 9-over.
The Eagles will look to climb the leaderboard in the second round of the SAC Championships, teeing off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday in Greenville, South Carolina.
