Cishek closes fifth season in Miami with authority

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – 2007 Carson-Newman graduate Steve Cishek concluded his fifth Major League Baseball season with the Miami Marlins after another impressive season.

Cishek finished the season with 39 saves, a mark only seven other pitchers in all of baseball topped. Overall, the right-handed reliever went 4-5 with a 3.17 earned run average in 67 appearances with 84 strikeouts and 21 walks.

The 28-year-old made 65 or more appearances for the third consecutive season while setting new career-highs in strikeouts (84) and saves (39).

The hurler was lights out to end the 2014 season. In his final nine outings, Cishek earned eight saves with 13 strikeouts, two walks and five hits allowed in that span.

The Marlins fifth round pick in 2007 racked up the fourth-most saves in the big leagues after the All-Star break with 19 in 20 chances. Cishek was solid in the concluding months with a 2.33 ERA with 39 strikeouts and just eight walks. He recorded at least one K in 53 of his 65 appearances while tallying a scoreless outing 49 times.  

Cishek was named the Co-Player of the Week in the National League with New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom in the final week of July. The six-foot-six flamethrower recorded five saves, eight strikeouts in five innings pitched while yielding just one earned run on two hits. It was the second time in his career that Cishek was honored after receiving the accolade the week of July 28, 2013.

The Falmouth, Mass. native with enter the 2015 season nine saves shy of the 100 save mark and 16 strikeouts short of career punch out number 300.

The Marlins finished fourth in the National League East standings, but Miami was in the playoff hunt most of the season until start outfielder Giancarlo Stanton was hit in the face in a game against Milwaukee that forced Stanton to miss the remainder of the season.
