Apicella shining in New York Collegiate League

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman baseball all-region pitcher Vince Apicella (Dillsburg, Pa.) is off to a stellar start to a summer of baseball with the Geneva Redwings in the New York Collegiate League.

Apicella leads the collegiate wooden bat league in strikeouts and is second in ERA after three weeks and three starts. Apicella has tallied more than a strikeout and a quarter per inning pitched with 32 on season. He sports a 0.37 ERA, allowing a solitary earned run on the year.

Apicella is 2-0 this year.  He began the year with a no-decision against the Syracuse Junior Chiefs. He went seven innings that game, surrendering five hits against 11 strikeouts.  He only walked one and saw an unearned run come across.

The rising senior collected his first win of the year the next week against the Syracuse Salt Cats.  Again, he gave up five hits and a walk, striking out eight in a complete game win.

His most recent outing also came against the Salt Cats.  Again, Apicella annihilated the Salt Cats lineup.  He struck out 13 and allowed two unearned runs in the Redwings 5-2 win.

Opponents are hitting .182 against him for the season.

Apicella isn't the only Eagle spending his summer in a collegiate wooden bat league.  Austin Kearney (Powell, Tenn.) is hitting .188 with six RBI for the Geneva Twins, also in the NYCL.

Catcher Greg Jones (Maryville, Tenn.) has hit .242 for the Dubose Country Bombers of the Ohio Valley League.  Dubose County currently sits atop the OVL standings with Jones starting every game behind the dish.

Finally, there's Brendan Campbell (Yardley, Pa.). The outfielder is in Trenton playing for the Generals of the Atlantic Coast Baseball League. Campbell opened the year by going 1-for-3 with a run scored against the Staten Island Tide.
