Bryant becomes third hurler to earn Astroturf SAC Pitcher of the Week

VIDEO: Carson Bryant Interview

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Senior relief pitcher Carson Bryant (Fletcher, N.C.) was named the South Atlantic Conference's Pitcher of the Week after going 1-0 with three saves in four appearances announced by the league Wednesday afternoon. It is the fourth time a Carson-Newman pitcher has earned the honor this season as Bryant joins senior Quinton Yocom (Cable, Ohio) and two-time winner Vince Apicella (Dillsburg, Pa.).

"It felt real good," Bryant said. "I wouldn't have that opportunity if the team wasn't playing like they were. They have to get to that point first to get the lead for me to have that position. They're the ones I have to thank really."

The righthander made an appearance in four of the five games last week during a 5-0 streak for Carson-Newman. Bryant earned the save against Limestone and at UVA-Wise in the midweek working an inning while striking out a batter.

The Fletcher, N.C. native worked two innings against Winston-Salem State in the series opener allowing two hits while striking out four, to earn his first victory of the season in the Eagles walk-off 4-3 win over the Rams.

Bryant capped his week by earning his fifth save of the year in 1.1 innings of relief in the second game against the Rams. Bryant's fifth save marked the first time since Ryan Fillers in 2012 that an Eagle has tallied five saves in a year. The last time a Carson-Newman reliever had six saves was Corbin Arial in 2008.

"I like our staff a lot this year," Bryant said. "A lot of older guys, back-end heavy. We have a lot of other guys that can do the same thing so I'm excited to see what we can do at the end of the year."

The Eagles are in action Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. against the Belmont Abbey Crusaders. Join Michael Wottreng and Matthew Osborne for the broadcast on cneagles.com/live for all of the live action.
