Apicella reels in second straight Astroturf SAC Pitcher of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Junior lefthanded pitcher Vince Apicella (Dillsburg, Pa.) became the first Carson-Newman hurler to win consecutive Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week awards since the accolade was introduced in 2007 Tuesday afternoon.

Apicella also became the first Carson-Newman hand grenader since 2010 to take home the honor twice in one season. Austin Bridgewater took home the honor twice in 2010 en route to a second team All-SAC selection by going 5-1 with a 4.32 earned run average.

The southpaw went the distance for the second time in as many starts in a 3-1 victory over the Brevard Tornados in the first game of a doubleheader on February 14. Apicella matched his week one performance by striking out a career-high 13 batters while yielding his first earned run of the year on two hits and five walks. The junior is now 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA and 26 strikeouts, ranking second and third in the league in ERA and strikeouts.

Apicella is the first SAC pitcher to win this honor in consecutive weeks since Coker's Matt Prosser began the 2014 with back-to-back Pitcher of the Week awards on February 4 and 11.

Carson-Newman is scheduled to take on Shorter Wednesday afternoon at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex in Rome, Ga. at 1 p.m.
