Eagles sled south to Shorter Wednesday

Carson-Newman Baseball Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (5-3) will battle the elements Wednesday afternoon as they travel to Rome, Ga. To take on the Shorter Hawks (4-3) for a 1 p.m. first pitch at the Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex.

Despite wintry weather in the East Tennessee area, the Eagles will travel to Georgia where the high on Wednesday should be no higher than 38 degrees, but it gives Carson-Newman a chance to hit the diamond before a weekend series with SAC opponent Anderson (S.C.) at home.

For the second consecutive week, Carson-Newman will enter the midweek slate coming off of a series victory in conference play. Most recently, the Eagles won both games on Saturday to take two of three against Brevard.

Aggressiveness has been a strong suit on the mound and in the field for Carson-Newman this year. The Eagles rank ninth in the SAC with a .258 team batting average, but rank fifth in the league with 12 stolen bases. In 2014, coach Tom Griffin's group stole 29 bases as a team during the entire season as three players tied for the team lead with five steals each. Sophomore centerfielder Ryan Addington (Cincinnati, Ohio) has five steals through eight games this season to lead the way at the top of the lineup.

The Eagles and Hawks will meet for just the second time ever Wednesday after Carson-Newman defeated Shorter 10-6 in Rome, Ga. On February 5, 2014.

Seven different players had at least two hits in the game for Carson-Newman as the Eagles scored at least one run in each of the final six innings to take the victory. Peter Rajkovich and Joe Tipton (Dandridge, Tenn.) each had three hits in the game.

The first two Eagle pitchers allowed 10 hits while the combination of Michael Cogliano (Medford, N.J.), Carson Bryant (Fletcher, N.C.), Lucas Watson and Daniel Sharp allowed one walk and two hits on 10 strikeouts in the final five innings of the contest.
