Inaugural series between Eagles and Yellow Jackets commences Tuesday

Carson-Newman Baseball Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Returning to the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex Tuesday for a 3 p.m. first pitch, the Carson-Newman Eagles (10-13) welcome the Cedarville Yellow Jackets (6-5) for the first of a two-game series. Game two of the series is scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m.

The Eagles snapped a six-game losing streak in the final game of last weekend's series at Mars Hill Sunday by winning 6-2 courtesy of five runs in the final two innings of play.

Timely hitting for coach Tom Griffin's group has improved since the calendar flipped to May. The Eagles were hitting .234 as a group with runners in scoring position in February. In 10 March games, Carson-Newman is hitting .289 including 16 runs batted in with two outs.

The Eagles are looking to use Sunday's victory over the Lions to jumpstart a winning streak with nine of their next 10 games taking place at home.

Carson-Newman and Cedarville have never met on the diamond as the Yellow Jackets are in their third year of Division II play as members of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Cedarville has a winning record every year since 2009 including a 38-win season in 2012.

The highlight of the 2015 campaign for the Yellow Jackets so far was an 8-4 victory over six-time national champion and No. 1 Tampa in the Sunshine State on March 4. Cedarville scored at least one run in each of the first five innings jumping out to a 7-0 advantage after three and a half innings. Three pitchers held Tampa to just five hits in the game. Third basemen Drew Johnson and leftfielder David Lenhardt led the offensive attacked with two hits and an RBI apiece.

Johnson was named the GMAC Player of the Week on March 8 after going 12-for-27 at the plate with three doubles, a triple, five runs scored and five RBI. The third basemen leads the team with a .378 batting average and a team-high six runs batted in.

Both games of the series will be broadcast with a free video and audio stream by visiting cneagles.com/live courtesy of the Eagle Sports Network.
