SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman improved seven shots from day one to day two of the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate to finish tied for eighth with a two-day total of 607. The Eagles finished in front of conference mates Coker, Lenoir-Rhyne, Brevard and Catawba.
Carson-Newman head men's golf coach john Minor said the Eagles improved play from day one to day to can be attributed from playing good golf from the beginning of the round.
"We just had a better start today," Minor said. "We hit five great tee balls off of a very difficult first tee and we're able to continue on from there today."
Rafael Jackson (Rutledge, Tenn.) led the charge for the Eagles with a 72 (E) on day two. He improved five strokes for the second round to finish at 149 (+5) for the tournament. The finish was good enough for a tie for 23rd.
Fellow senior Jonathan Kim-Moss ended with a two-day 150 (+6) and in a tie for 29th.
"They're working on developing leadership capabilities," Minor said of his two seniors. "We'll go as they go as they work on bringing this team along. We'll definitely get better."
Nicklaus Kennedy, Dalton Reese and Nathan Hodge rounded out the scoring for C-N as individuals with a 152 (+8), 156 (+12) and 165 (+21), respectively.
The Eagles head to Kiawah Island for their next tournament in a week.
