England takes top honors at Etowah Intercollegiate

ETOWAH, N.C.— It only took freshman Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) three tournaments to make Carson-Newman history, winning the Etowah Intercollegiate at the Etowah Valley Country Club.

A final round low 75 propelled England to the tournament win, finishing with a two-round total of 148.

"My thought process was to not think about my position, to just keep my same attitude and one shot at a time," England said. "I'm very excited to win for the first time. I'm grateful for the opportunity to play this week."

England's win was the first individual tournament win since Sarah Jane Sinard won 2009 Lady Falcon/McNairy Invitational.

The Carson-Newman team finished the tournament in second, trailing the Newberry Wolves by six shots. Second is the best finish for the Eagles since last season's Agnes McAmis Memorial.

"Finishing second is a very good week for us but I know we still have work to do. Especially with Newberry and LMU finishing first and third. Conference is going to be tough this year," coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "We have a week off  to work on key areas, putting and short game."

Junior Meridith Hawkins (Powell, Tenn.) shot a final round 77 to finish the tournament in seventh, marking the second Eagle to finish the Etowah Intercollegiate in the top-10.

Sophomore Jessica Hart (Roanoke, Va.) and junior Rebekah Pruett (Niceville, Fla.) finished the tournament one stroke apart and coming in 12nd and 13th respectively. Pruett was the tournament's second-highest finishing individual.

Junior Kelly Pemberton (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot a final round 80 to place 18th. Freshman Mikaela Thibodeau (Davie, Fla.) tied in 20th with a two-round total of 167.

The next event for the Eagles takes place October 6th and 7th at the Guy Harvey Invitational at PGA National Resort in West Palm Beach, Fla.
