Hawkins leads Eagles on final day of Kiawah Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- The Carson-Newman women's golf team finished the second and final round of the Kiawah Intercollegiate hosted by Tusculum College at Cougar Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C in ninth-place.

Three Eagles improved their upon their first round score and two C-N golfers finished in the top-15 in the event.

"Overall, not too bad of a start to the season. I would of liked a better finish by our #4 and #5 players, but #1-3 players did well. The team has to work hard over the next few weeks if we are going to win," coach Suzanne Strudwick said.

Reigning Co-SAC Player of the Year Meridith Hawkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished off the best tournament of her junior season finishing with a nine-over 153. Freshman Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) also shot a 153 as the two tied with two other golfers to finish in a four-way tie for 13th.

Senior Danielle Baiunco (Melbourne, Fla.) dropped her first round score by four strokes to finish round two with a 79. She tied with eight other golfers for 41st overall.

Sophomore Jessica Hart (Roanoke, Va.) shot a final round 89 and finished in 65th. Junior Rebekah Pruett (Niceville, Fla.) improved her first round score by three strokes and finished tied for 72nd.

Fifteen-ranked Florida Southern won the team competiton seven strokes over Montevallo for the fourth time. Northwood's (Fla.) Elsa Westin won the individual competition with a seven-under 137, beating Florida Southern's Emily Rymer by four strokes. She set a tournament record with the score of 137 and her final round 67 tied the tournament record for lowest score. 

The Eagles are off for the next two weeks until March 2nd and 3rd in the Armstrong Pirate Women's Invitational at Savannah Quarters Country Club in Savannah, Ga.
