Eagles conclude Fighting Camel Fall Classic in seventh

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Carson-Newman women's golf coach Suzanne Strudwick's main hope for her team at this week's Fighting Camel Fall Classic was for them to be the little train that could.

The Eagles were making their first appearance in a Division-I field at the event hosted by Campbell University. Facing eight D-I programs, expectations were low for Carson-Newman to compete.

Compete is what the Eagles did as C-N finished in seventh-place at the tournament held at Keith Hills Country Club.

"Today, we didn't play as well, only really good play was from senior Danielle (Baiunco)," Strudwick said. "Really pleased with progress this week and for a small school up against D-I schools, we had a good showing. Campbell was a great host and would love to play again in their event."

Senior Danielle Baiunco (Melbourne, Fla.) was the highest finishing Eagle as she placed in a tie for 13th after shooting a final-round 76. She moved up the leaderboard two spots from her 15th-place mark after Monday.

Junior Meridith Hawkins (Powell, Tenn.) finished the tournament with a 81, placing her in 21st.

Freshman Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) continued her consistent play from day one and shot a final-round 80 to move up the leaderboard a few positions for a 33rd-place tie.

Junior Rebekah Pruett (Niceville, Fla.) shot an 86 to finish in a tie for 47th and freshman Mikaela Thibodeau (Davie, Fla.) finished in a tie for 50th.

Host Campbell won its own event for the 14th out of the last 15 years and High Point's Sarah Bae won the tournament with a final score of four-over 220.

"Good takeaways from the end of season. Looking forward to some time off to prepare for Spring," Strudwick said.

The Fighting Camel Fall Classic concluded the fall portion of the Eagles' schedule. The team will pick up the clubs starting again in the spring.
