Fall Frosty Awards Nominees: Upset of the Year

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - From now until Jan. 2, the Carson-Newman Athletic Communications Department will debut the Frosty Award nominees for the fall semester.  Here are the fall nominees for Upset of the Year.  Sunday, the nominees for Male Newcomer of the Year will be released. 

The second annual Frosty Awards will take place in April and honor athletic excellence in Carson-Newman's athletic department. 

 

Volleyball @ Wingate

On November 1, the Carson-Newman Eagles defeated the seventh-ranked Wingate Bulldogs in five sets, 17-25, 25-20, 28-26, 19-25 and 15-13 at Cuddy Arena. It was the first time since September 24, 2005 C-N defeated Wingate, snapping a string of 25 straight matches in the series that went the way of Wingate.

The Bulldogs had won 55 consecutive matches in league play dating back to a four-set loss at Lenoir-Rhyne on September 21, 2012.

Senior outside hitter Lauren Santarelli led the way with 15 kills on a .279 attack percentage to go along with four digs and three block assists.

The sixth-seeded Carson-Newman Eagles earned their first sweep in NCAA play in program history defeating the No. 3 seed USC Aiken Pacers 26-24, 29-27 and 25-23 on November 20 at Cuddy Arena in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. In the second stanza, Carson-Newman was trailing 21-17 and won seven of the next eight points to stave off a set point and tie the score at 24. The two sides traded points until junior outside hitter Sara Fairley's (Charlotte, N.C.) service ace put the Eagles on top two sets to none with a 29-27 win. Senior outside hitter Rachel Harper finished with a match-high 16 kills to go along with seven digs and a Carson-Newman NCAA Tournament program record four service aces. 

Danielle Baiunco at the Campbell Invitational 

The Melbourne, Fla. senior finished tied for 13th in the Fighting Camel Fall Classic, a Division-I tournament hosted by the Campbell Fighting Camels. Baiunco finished ahead of 43 Division-I golfers and she was the third-highest placed Division-II athlete.

The Men's 400 free relay at the Fall Frenzy

On the final day of the Fall Frenzy, the Carson-Newman men's 400 Freestyle relay team picked up the program's first-ever relay win at a major meet as the Eagles finished in first-place with a time of 2:59.94. The team consisting Sam Schechter, Paul Ungur, Ben Young and Stephen Parsons finished with the first sub-three minute time of the year and the team set a NCAA provisional time.
