England hegemonic in Eagles' victory over Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Carson-Newman women's golf team kicked off the spring portion of its schedule with a 10-stroke victory over the Newberry Wolves Thursday at the Country Club of Newberry.

The Eagles finished the event with a shot total of 340, while Newberry finished with a 350.

Freshman Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) won the event by shooting a round of 78, two strokes better than the second-place finisher. England also won this season's Etowah Intercollegiate in September.

"Team showed signs of good play today. I'm very pleased with Elizabeth's 78 low score for the day," coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "I'm also very pleased to win by 10 shots over our host, Newberry. We definitely have lots of room to improve, but glad to get first competition under our belt."

Senior Danielle Baiunco (Melbourne, Fla.) finished third with a score 81, three strokes off England. Junior Rebekah Pruett (Niceville, Fla.) finished fifth with a round of 90.

Junior Meridith Hawkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished tied for sixth with a round of 91, one shot behind Pruett. Sophomore Jessica Hart finished ninth with a round of 98.

The Eagles pick up the win in the program's first dual meet since before 2009.

"This is a format I would love to repeat every year. It's fun, fast and going "head-to-head" against our conference rivals is a fun way to compete. Looking forward to this week's Kiawah Island Intercollege. I hope we can repeat this result," Strudwick said.

The Eagles now will travel to Kiawah Island, S.C. for this weekend's Kiawah Island Intercollegiate to be played Saturday and Sunday at Cougar Point Golf Club.
