Eagles perched in ninth after round one of Wingate Intercollegiate Challenge

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman women's golf team is in ninth-place after the first round of the Wingate Intercollegiate Challenge at Ole Sycamore Golf Plantation in Charlotte, N.C.

The Eagles finished the first round with a team total of 334.

"A very cold, windy morning to start, so scoring was difficult. Mainly, our team did well from tee to green, but on greens, we are putting poorly," coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "We lacked confidence in both short and long putts. The speed of Ole Sycamore greens are a little different than what we are used to, so if we can gain some feel for tomorrow, we should be good. I'm looking to a much better day tomorrow."

Freshman Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) and junior Kelli Pemberton (Knoxville, Tenn.) are tied with the team lead after shooting a round of 82. England has one of the best scores in par-4 scoring in the tournament as she is four-over. Pemberton is tied for fourth in the tournament with two birdies. Pemberton's 82 is the second-best first round score she has posted this season; she opened the season with a first round 79 at the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate. The duo is tied for 22nd.

Junior Meridith Hawkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) is tied for 39th after a score of 84. The junior also has a score of four-over on par-4s with an average score of 4.44 strokes.

Senior Danielle Baiunco (Melbourne, Fla.) is tied for 46th after a round of 86. Sophomore Jessica Hart (Roanoke, Va.) is a shot behind Baiunco with a first round score of 87. Hart is tied for 53rd.

Junior Rebekah Pruett (Niceville, Fla.) is playing as an individual in the tournament. She is one-over on par-3s and is averaging 3.25 strokes on the shortest holes at the Golf Plantation and is tied for 69th in the competition after a round of 90.

King leads the tournament by a single stroke over Limestone as the Tornado shot 317. South Atlantic Conference foe Newberry is in third with a team total of 321. Wingate's Caitlin Starrs leads the individual competition with an opening round 75.

The Wingate Intercollegiate Challenge will finish Tuesday with 18 holes at Ole Sycamore Golf Plantation.
