JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- Carson-Newman swimming bested the Emory & Henry Wasps 311-75 this evening, Dec. 8. 

Carson-Newman swimming grabbed a dominant win over the Wasps at home this evening, Dec. 8. The Eagles put up 311 points to the Wasps 75. C-N men's swim contributed 159 points to the team score, while the women added 152. 

"We were just looking to come in and swim fast tonight," assistant swim coach Aaron Bauer said. "Across the board, everyone swam really well. Tonight was about swimming the race clean and focusing in on those details." 

C-N swim started the meet with a sweep in the 200-yard medley relay. The women finished first in 1:46.99. Kyla Blakemore, Breanna Belcher, Chrisman Rand, and Kennadi King each swam a leg in the event. On the men's side of competition, Nick Rennhack, Asger Hartvig, Jakov Igrec, and Hayden Wright contributed to a first-place finish in 1:37.33. 

The Eagles won 21 out of 22 events throughout the night, and 12 different swimmers left with an individual first-place finish. 

The women swept the podium in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Makayla Young placed first in 10:52.25, and Lillian Hilt (11:08.55) and Christa Schlimper (11:35.50) finished second and third respectively. In the men's event, Alonso Castro grabbed gold in 10:28.89, and teammate Hunter Konarski placed second in 10:49.09. Castro also won the men's 200-yard butterfly in 2:03.70. On the women's side of competition, Martina Ivanova placed first in 2:06.99. 

"I think the team did a really good job," women's swimmer Maria Tirulli said. "Everyone had finals last week, so it was a tough week for everyone. Everyone is helping each other out, and I think it'll keep getting better as we move forward."

Tirulli won two events on the night. She placed first in the women's 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.72. Tirulli also grabbed gold in the 500-yard freestyle where she finished first in 5:18.79, over 10 seconds quicker than her closest competition. 

"I think I did good in both of my events tonight. I wasn't expecting my times, so I am really proud of how I swam. It was a good meet for me," Tirulli said. "Now, it is about how we approach every single practice and work on getting better every single day." 

In the men's 200-yard freestyle, Daniel de Oliveira won gold in 1:43.84. Tyler Schehr took second in 1:47.82. The two Eagles also took first and second in the men's 200-yard backstroke. De Oliveira landed in first with a time of 1:54.93, while teammate Schehr placed second in 1:57.71. Benaiah McDowell finished third in the event with a time of 1:57.90. 

Belcher placed first in the women's 200-yard IM in 2:14.71, and Daniel Ribeiro grabbed gold for the men's team in 1:52.38. Belcher won again in the 200-yard breastroke (2:25.20). Hartvig won the men's 200 breast in 2:12.17. 

In the 100-yard freestyle, King won gold with a time of 53.02. Emma Bowling landed in second in 57.07. Hartvig took home first for the men (48.77), and Wright placed second (49.78). Ethan Lawless placed fourth in the event with a time of 54.56. Arthur Gluzman won the men's 50-yard freestyle in 20.79, and Wright continued to impress with a second-place finish in 22.23. 

"I thought tonight was great," men's swimmer Lawless said. "We are focused on small details, and I think I improved on my details tonight. Now, we have to be intentional with our training. It's about making sure every practice matters and counts." 

The Eagles ended the night with first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Antonia Sanint raced with teammates Rand, Parr, and King, and the quartet finished in 1:38.92. The men won gold in 1:24.27. Ribeiro, Gluzman, Schehr, and de Oliveira contributed to the finish. 

"We are heading into some heavy training for the next week," Bauer said. "We are really approaching this training like professional athletes, and we are excited to go down for our Christmas training camp in Southern Florida for a week. When we get back to campus in early January, it'll really be us focusing in and preparing for conference in February."
