C-N prepares for tough competition at the Emory Fall Invitational

Ben Young Interview

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- Carson-Newman swim is headed to the Emory Fall Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. for the first two-day meet of the season.

Carson-Newman swim will race this upcoming weekend at the Emory Fall Invitational. The meet will take place in the Woodruff P.E. Center in Atlanta, Ga. and begin on Friday, Nov. 3 at 6:00 p.m. The second day of competition will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4.

"We are really looking forward to getting back at it this weekend. We'll continue having quick turn-arounds for the next few weeks. Sometimes we allow ourselves to make silly excuses when we travel. A pool is a pool at the end of the day, and every meet is an opportunity to race. For us, it's about fixing the little things we can control from this past weekend and moving forward to Emory," head swim coach Ben Young said.

Four teams will attend the meet. C-N will face off with Emory University, Georgia Southern University, and Wingate University throughout the weekend. Georgia Southern will only bring a women's team to the event.

"It's the exact same lineup, as far as teams go, as last year. It's our one and only opportunity during the season to see Wingate head-to-head. Emory has been flying recently, and they have posted some solid results. Georgia Southern, on the women's side, always comes ready to race with a big team. It's a solid atmosphere to be a part of, and it's a big meet with a lot of fast swimmers," Young said.

The Eagles are three-for-three on the season after last weekend's match-up against Mars Hill. The Eagles bested the Lions 256-149. The women took home a dominant victory from the away meet, leaving with 148 points, and the men added 108 points to the team score. The Wingate Bulldogs, the Eagles' only conference competition at the upcoming Fall Invitational, are 3-1 in dual meets so far this season. The Bulldogs have bested Lenoir-Rhyne, UNC Pembroke, and Chowan, falling only to Queens at the opening of the season.

C-N attended the Emory Invite last year as well, earning a second-place team finish with 995 points at the conclusion of the meet. In the men's 100-yard freestyle, Wander Sousa placed first with a time of 45.80, and Arthur Gluzman came in third. Sousa secured another first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a 21.36 time, and Carson Jones found the podium in the event placing third with a time of 21.52. On the women's side of competition, Kennadi King placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time 23.87, and Antonia Sanint followed shortly after finishing second in 23.88. Kyla Blakemore found gold in 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.41.

"Last year going into this meet, we were in a much different part of our cycle, so we swam really well. We are still taking an approach that we are going down there ready to swim fast and put some races together, but we are definitely at a different part of our cycle this year. Most of our focus is toward three weeks when we travel up to U-Indy. For now, though, we are still expecting those solid swims and want to start to piece all of the pieces of the puzzle together that we have been working on over the last several weeks," Young said.

The team will now head back to Atlanta, Ga. for another overnight stay.

"This is all preparation for conference and nationals. This will be our first overnight stay. It's more of a dress rehearsal for us to see how we do with being away from our beds that we are used to and away from our daily routine. It gives everyone an opportunity to have that dress rehearsal before going into midseason. It's important to go through all of those steps prior to having to do it back-to-back days," Young said.
