Eagles battle hard against U-Indy

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Carson-Newman swim grabbed a slew of top-5 finishes during the first two days of midseason competition. 

"We've had a couple solid sessions with some good in-season personal bests from the team," head swim coach Ben Young said. 

Chrisman Rand grabbed gold in the women's 50-yard freestyle in 23.99. Kennadi King tied for second in the event with a time of 24.06. Teammate Lily Parr placed seventh in 24.15, and Emma Bowling rounded out the top-10 with a finals time of 24.41. On the men's side of competition, Arthur Gluzman grabbed bronze in 20.68 seconds. 

Rand continued to impress with a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.32. Freshman Martina Ivanova finished fifth in the event (57.95). Maria Tirulli placed sixth (57.98), and Kyla Blakemore placed eighth (58.21). Parr grabbed 10th in 59.18. Daniel de Oliveira finished third in the men's 100 fly in 48.86, and Daniel Ribeiro placed fifth in 48.93. Gluzman placed in the eighth in the event in 49.57. 

De Oliveira grabbed gold in the men's 200-yard freestyle. He completed the race in 1:39.58. Eli Poole finished sixth in 1:46.06. King placed third in the women's 200 free with a time of 1:54.15. Tirulli followed behind in 1:54.64 for a fifth-place finish. Two other Eagles, Kate Salsbury and Antonia Sanint, finished eighth (1:56.17) and ninth (1:56.86) respectively. 

In the women's 400-yard IM, Makayla Young grabbed third 4:36.65, and teammate Lillian Hilt placed fourth in 4:37.17. Jakov Igrec placed fourth for the men in 4:10.36. Asger Hartvig earned the seventh place in 4:13.80, and Benaiah McDowell grabbed eighth in 4:14.45. 

Young finished third in the women's 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:24.51, and Tirulli grabbed another top-5 finish with a time of 10:30.48. Alonso Castro grabbed bronze for the men in the event with a finals time of 9;48.42. Jed Little placed fifth in 9:58.30, and Poole grabbed sixth in 10:02.43. Hunter Konarski took seventh in 10:48.59. 

The Eagles placed second in 200-yard freestyle relay. The women's team grabbed silver in 1:34.57. King, Parr, Rand, and Sanint each contributed a leg. The men finished the race in 1:22.54. Ribeiro, de Oliveira, Gluzman, and McDowell each added to the second-place finish. C-N also found success in the 200-yard medley relay. Both the women's and men's team finished second in the event. 

"We had a much better start to session two. We started a bit sluggish during yesterday's session, which could have easily been from the drive or the early morning start to our day," Young said.

During tonight's events, Ribeiro placed first in the men's 100-yard backstroke (48.98). Castro finished second in the men's 500-yard freestyle in 4:37.91. Hartvig grabbed silver in the men's 100-yard breaststroke. 

In the women's 100-yard breaststroke, Belcher finished second in 1:03.00, and Sanint finished fifth in 1:06.01. Ivanova grabbed a second-place finish in the women's 200-yard butterfly in 2:05.17, and teammate Tirulli earned bronze in the event (2:05.41). 

The Eagles competed in the 800-yard freestyle relay and finished second on both the men's and women's side of competition. King, Blakemore, Salsbury, and Tirulli finished the event in 7:38.31. Castro, McDowell, Hartvig, and Igrec competed for the men and finished in 6:56.81. 

"We're looking forward to bringing it home with the final session tomorrow," Young said.
