King grabs gold in final day against U-Indy

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- Carson-Newman swim ended the midseason meet against U-Indy with a second-place finish and combined team score of 1,806.

"We had a solid end to the weekend," head swim coach Ben Young said. "It was great to see the team get up and race hard against a number one team in the nation on both the men's and women's side. It's very obvious as to why they are number one in the nation, but I'm proud that we didn't let that affect the way we raced."

During the final session of the midseason meet at U-Indy, Carson-Newman swim finished in second on both sides of competition. The women contributed 1,069.50 points to the team's combined score, and the men added 736.50. U-Indy finished the meet with 4,100 points to the Eagles' 1,806.

Kennadi King grabbed gold during the last session. She placed first in the women's 100-yard freestyle in 51.69. Chrisman Rand earned the sixth-place spot in 52.79, and Lily Parr followed behind in seventh with a time of 52.91. Emma Bowling snagged ninth place in 53.04. In the men's 100 free, Arthur Gluzman stood second on the podium with a time of 44.89. Teammate Daniel Ribeiro placed fifth in 45.64.

During the 200-yard backstroke, Kyla Blakemore finished third with a finals time of 2:02.68. Sarah Covington placed fourth in 2:05.51, and Lillian Hilt finished sixth in 2:07.69. Martina Ivanova finished eighth (2:09.04). On the men's side of the event, Tyler Schehr grabbed silver in 1:52.78, and Jakov Igrec earned a fifth-place spot in 1:56.79.

"We had some great swims. It was great to see someone like Breanna go 2:20 in the breast, which is a great in-season time. Antonia had a lifetime best in the 200 breast as well," Young said.

Breanna Belcher made her mark in the 200-yard breaststroke. Belcher placed second in 2:20.81. Antonia Sanint grabbed the four-spot in 2:22.08. Asger Hartvig placed fifth in the men's 200 breast in 2:08.87. Benaiah McDowell rounded out the top-10 in 2:14.63.

In the 1,650-yard freestyle, Makayla Young finished second in 17.49.68. Kate Salsbury took bronze in the event with a time of 18:12.12, and Fernanda Bautista snagged fourth in 18:50.74. Alonso Castro finished second for the men in 17:01.39. Jed Little, Eli Poole, and Ethan Lawless grabbed third (17:04.31), fourth (17:04.41), and fifth (18:53.99) in the event.

"Seeing some of our relays get up and go at the end was awesome. Again, two very tight races with the women and the men," Young said.

The Eagles placed second on both sides of competition during the 400-yard freestyle relay. King, Parr, Rand, and Sanint finished the race in 3:28.17. Daniel de Oliveira, Ribeiro, Gluzman, and Schehr swam for the men and finished in 3:00.73.

"Obviously, the biggest takeaway from the weekend was that we are very tired. We've got a lot of resting to do over the course of the next several weeks. We got up and swam fast for a midseason meet that wasn't typically what a midseason meet looks like, so it was good to see that, and it's good to be done. We are coming home and getting ready for the Thanksgiving break before we get things going again," Young said.

C-N will be back home Saturday, Dec. 9 to host Emory & Henry at 11:00 a.m. Stay up to date on cneagles.com.
