BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Carson-Newman jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and hung on to defeat Union College, 5-4, Friday afternoon on the road.
The Eagles swept the doubles to take a 3-0 lead into singles. Carson-Newman’s #3 doubles team of Adriano Kira (junior, Brazil) and Chris Acker (junior, Knoxville, TN) got the ball rolling with a convincing 8-3 win. Then the #1 doubles team of Rodolfo Schwarz (sophomore, Brazil) and Trent Slagle (junior, Knoxville, TN) secured the Eagles’ second point with an 8-6 victory. Coming back from a service break down, the doubles team of Jack Harvie (senior, Snellville, GA) and Paul Birdsong (freshman, Woodstock, GA) clinched the third point by winning in a tiebreak at #2 doubles.
This proved to be a huge point for the Eagles because the only singles victories for the Eagles came from Chris Acker and Jack Harvie. Acker defeated Kyle Shilling 6-2,6-1 at #5 singles, while Jack Harvie recovered from a first set loss to defeat Lucas Oliveira 4-6, 6-3,6-2 at #6 singles. The Eagles’ record improves to 2-1 on the season.
