Eagles drop season opener to TWC

CROSSVILLE, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's tennis team (1-3) fell to Tennessee Wesleyan (1-0) in its spring season opener 7-2.

"We have to give credit to Tennessee Wesleyan," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "They didn't give us much."

Sophomore Juan Perez (Ecuador) and freshman Joao Pedro Oliveira (Brazil) roped in the Eagles' lone doubles win defeating David Escobosa and Jacob Dorey 8-5 in the no. 1 spot.

Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and freshman Stefano Daza put up a good fight at no. 2 doubles against Alex Lehuza and Ezequiel Gils before losing 9-8 and a four set tie-breaker.

"We are disappointed in how we played," Love said. "We could have done better."

In singles play, Daza toppled Gad Azulay 6-2, 6-1 in the no. 3 position for the Eagles' second point.

At no. 1 singles, Perez fell just short of victory against Escobosa with a 6-2, 6-4 final. Daniel Douglas (Knoxville, Tenn.) lost 6-1, 6-3 to Jacob Dorey in the no. 6 place.

"We are disappointed," Love said, "but we can't take away from Tennessee Wesleyan and how they played. A lesson was learned from this match."
