Eagles fall short of victory against Patriots

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (2-7) men's tennis team dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to the University of the Cumberlands (2-2) Friday afternoon.

 

"The guys gave another great effort today," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "We just came up a bit short."

 

Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and Stefano Daza (Venezuela) claimed the Eagles' lone doubles point pushing the duo to a three match win streak. The pair defeated Tyler Smith and Darryl Macleish 8-3 in the no. 2 spot.

 

Daza and Mackay each contributed another point in singles play. At no. 3 singles, Daza beat Eduardo Cabrera in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 6-0. Mackay attained a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Smith in the no. 5 position advancing to a two game win streak.

 

"Austin and Stefano continue to play solid doubles," Coach Love said. "Austin, Stefano and Daniel came through with well-earned singles victories."

 

Senior Daniel Douglas (Knoxville, Tenn.) toppled Macleish 6-2, 6-2 in the no. 6 spot for the Eagles' fourth point.

 

At no. 4 singles, Jonathan Allen (Lenoir City, Tenn.) battled hard against Danilo Garcia but ultimately fell 7-5, 6-2.

 

C-N takes on Bluefield State tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.
