Eagles storm through Tornadoes for second SAC win

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman (4-13, 2-4 SAC) men's tennis team snagged a 5-4 victory over Brevard (1-11, 0-4 SAC) Thursday afternoon.

"This win was long overdue," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said. "We have given such a good effort and have not been able to find a way to win until today. I am happy for the guys."

The Eagles went into singles play trailing 2-1. The team of Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) and Joao Pedro Oliveria (Brazil) supplied the Eagles' lone doubles point in the no. 2 spot. The duo swept Guilherme Prophirio and Christop Plasa 8-0.

"Our singles play," Coach Love said, "really came through today and clinched the win because we were down 2-1 coming out of doubles."

In singles play, Stefano Daza (Venezuela) beat Rory Northam in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. Oliveria stole the win after a second set tiebreaker at no. 3 singles with a 6-5, 7-6 (5-0) final over Nathan Sabate.

"JP got us going with a straight set win at number three singles," Coach Love said. "Stefano Daza then pulled off a good comeback win at number two singles. He lost the first set but battled back to take the second set and then cruised in the third set. Those two wins were crucial."

Jonathan Allen (Lenoir City, Tenn.) seized a 6-2, 6-4 contest from Plasa at no. 4 singles while Mackay secured a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Prophirio in the no. 5 position.

"The momentum carried into Austin's straight set win at number five," Coach Love said. "B that time, Jon had won the first set of his match by a score of 6-2, but had to battle hard to finish off the second set 6-4."

Juan Perez (Ecuador) battled hard at no. 1 singles before dropping the match in three sets to David Taggart 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

The Eagles continue conference play at Queens March 30 at 1 p.m.
