JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (12-4, 9-3 SAC) is back at Holt Fieldhouse tomorrow evening when it welcomes in UVA Wise (8-7, 5-6 SAC) for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
Carson-Newman snapped a two-game losing streak this past Saturday by defeating Newberry 79-59. The Lady Eagles had their second-best shooting day of the season, going 34 for 63 (54%) from the field. It was the most efficient road scoring effort since shooting 61 percent at Coker on February 26, 2022. Four different players shot above 50 percent from the field and three finished in double-figures.
Scoring 20 points for the 27th time in her career on Saturday against Newberry, Lindsey Taylor (Maryville, Tenn.) moved up two spots to fifth on the program's scoring list. Taylor needs just 14 points to move up to fourth on the all-time scoring list. Since the start of the new calendar year, Taylor has been on a tear averaging 21.5 points per game while shooting 72 percent from the field.
Campbell Penland's (Sevierville, Tenn.) 1,220 career points is 19th in school history. She is just 11 points from passing Jana Davis on the scoring list. Penland ranks first in the South Atlantic Conference in three-pointers made (38), three-point percentage (40.9) and three-point pointers made per game (2.38). Penland needs three more triples to pass Kailyn Brooks in career three-pointers as a Lady Eagle. She currently has 201 three-pointers for her career.
The Lady Eagles have won all 13 contests against UVA Wise all-time. Carson-Newman's 94-87 victory in Wise earlier this season was the second closest contest the two sides of played. The high-scoring affair saw both teams shoot better than 49 percent from the field. C-N got a balanced attack with seven players scoring eight points or more led by Penland's 17-point day.
This matchup features two of the better scoring offenses in the South Atlantic Conference. Both teams are in the top 30 nationally in scoring with C-N averaging nine more points game ranking eighth nationally. Both teams also pass the ball well, ranking 1st and 10th in assists per game nationally.
UVA Wise heads to Mossy Creek on a two-game winning streak, defeating Limestone on the road 78-66 and then most recently taking down Lenoir-Rhyne on Sunday 84-79. Wise has not won three consecutive conference games since the end of the 2022-23 season. The Highland Cavaliers are 8-7 overall this season and have a 5-6 league record. That league mark is tied for seventh place in the SAC standings.
Jamie Cluesman's team has won two of its six road games this season. Both road victories have been by double-digits in league play.
Sable Burnside is the reigning conference player of the week. She is the second two-time winner of the weekly honor this season. For the week, she averaged 25 points per game, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting 61.3 percent from the field and 88.9 percent from the free throw line. The conference's fourth-best scorer averages just shy of 17 points per game and shoots the second-best percentage from the field at 56.4. Wise also gets 13.5 points per game from Katlin Burger.
UVA Wise is the fifth-most efficient team in the country at 46.7 percent. It has shot better than 44 percent in 13 of its 14 games this season.
