VIDEO: Carson-Newman at UVA Wise Highlights
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (6-1, 4-1 SAC) concludes a three-game road stretch tomorrow evening when it travels to the Prior Convocation Center for a South Atlantic Conference contest against UVA Wise (5-3, 2-2 SAC) at 5:30 p.m.
Carson-Newman suffered its first loss of the regular season on Saturday against Anderson. The Lady Eagles were held to a season-low 68 points and committed a season-high 23 turnovers. C-N has led at halftime in all seven games but lost its 11-point halftime lead by scoring a season-low 29 second half points.
Lindsey Taylor (Maryville, Tenn.) moved into the top ten all-time in scoring in program history by recording her 26th career double-double on Saturday. She sits at 1,363 career points and is 15 points away from passing Haris Price for ninth-most in the program's history.
Campbell Penland (Sevierville, Tenn.) continues to work her way up the all-time scoring list as well. The senior guard's 1,122 career points is 24th in school history, only six points away from 23rd and 78 points from the top 20. Penland ranks first in the South Atlantic Conference in three-pointers made (19), three-point percentage (43.2) and three-point pointers made per game (2.71).
Emily Gonzalez (Lenoir City, Tenn.) passing has been stellar through the first month of the season. Her 3.50 assist to turnover ratio leads the conference and is 7th in DII. She has also been terrific defensively, leading the team with 20 steals, which is best in the SAC and top 25 nationally.
Carson-Newman has won all 12 meetings versus UVA Wise and all but one by double-digits. C-N has won seven straight games against UVA Wise by 10 or more and the average margin of victory during this stretch is 20. The last time these two teams met, it came at the Prior Center and Braelyn Wykle went bananas in a 15-point Carson-Newman win. The program's all-time leading scorer made her first 10 shots and finished with 37 points and seven three-pointers. She was 13-15 from the field and seven of nine from long range.
UVA Wise finished the first month of the season 5-3 overall, with a 2-2 league record. The Highland Cavaliers were picked to finish ninth in the preseason coaches' poll. Wise has a home and road conference win this season against Emory & Henry and Catawba. It is coming off a two-point road loss to Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday.
Jamie Cluesman's team has won two of its three games at the Prior Center this season. All three games have been decided by double-digits. Coker handed UVA Wise an 18-point home loss earlier ten days ago. The home wins have been against King and Catawba.
The Cavaliers have been one of the most efficient teams in the country through eight games. As a team, they are shooting 48.6 percent from the field, best in the conference and seventh-best nationally. That efficiency has led to the third-most points per game in the league at 76.3.
Leading the offensive charge is the conference's leading scorer, Sable Burnside. Her 18.4 points per game comes on a league-best 58.5 percent shooting from the field. She is her team's top rebounder as well, snagging more than seven per contest.
Katlin Burger is also averaging double-figures with 14.5 points per game on 53.3 percent shooting.
