SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – After two rounds at the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate, the Carson-Newman men's golf team sits in second-place heading into Tuesday morning's final round on the River Course at the Sevierville Golf Club. Three Eagles scatter the top-10, led by junior Andrew Hall (Knoxville, Tenn.).
Carson-Newman's second round was the first team round to be played below 290 since the second round of the McDonough Cup on October 28th, 2013.
"Really good job by (Andrew Hall, Dalton Reese and Nathan Hodge). I am happy being in second after struggling in the morning and they did a really, really nice job. We have three guys in the top-10. I think that's good. And all those guys have a chance to win the golf tournament tomorrow," coach Randy Wylie said after his team's first day. "We just have to go out and play as a team."
Hall sits in sixth-place after two rounds with an even score of 144, six shots behind the lead. Sophomore Dalton Reese (Warrington, Ga.) is nine shots behind the lead tied for seventh, nine shots behind the leader, and junior Nathan Hodge (Jefferson City, Tenn.) is a shot behind Reese in ninth.
After shooting a first round 75, Hall rebounded well in the second round with a 69 to put him at even par. Reese shot a score of 77 in the first round, but a second-round 70 brought him back to three shots over par.
Hodge opened the tournament with a 76, but shot even during the second round to stay at four-over par.
In the first round, Carson-Newman was led Nick Kennedy (London, Ontario, Canada) with a two-over score of 74.
Limestone College leads the team competition with an overall score of 594. Trevecca Nazarene's Spencer Scarbrough leads the tournament at six-under after shooting consecutive 69s.
The final round of the Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate is Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. at the Sevierville Golf Club.
