Women's tennis shows well in Reinhart Invitational

CANTON, Ga. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team took part in the Reinhart University Invitational Tournament earlier today.

"We had a good weekend of competition," Carson-Newman head tennis coach Jean Love said, "with all players seeing some action."

Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) defeated Reinhart's Quast 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the second round of the Women's A Singles main draw. Middle Georgia's Vasileva took down Guerreiro 6-2, 6-1 in the final round.

Eagle Jill Corsato, after being beaten 7-6(1), 6-1 by Vaslieva, went on to win the consolation draw of A singles. Corsato dominated both Quast 6-1, 6-1 and Middle Georgia's Ashley 6-0, 6-1.

In B Singles main draw, C-N's Sydney Ledington fought hard for a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory over Lee University's Good, but fell in the second round to Lee's Garcia-Nieto 6-4, 6-4.

Senior Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) was beaten in round one by RU's Kroll in a third-set tiebreaker 2-6, 6-1, 10-7. Ott proceeded to the final round of B Singles Consolation play after beating MG's Greene 6-1, 6-2, but lost in the final to MG's Gordiga 7-5, 6-4.

C-N's Catherine Cook won her first three matches before bowing out in the final in C Singles main draw. Cook stole a 7-5, 6-4 contest from Lee's Friedlander in round one, a 7-5, 6-3 game from MG's Culpepper in round two, and drained Lee's Hudhall 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinal match.

In group A doubles play, Corsato and Mallory Jackson of C-N won the consolation round 8-6 over the MG team of Vaslieva/Gordiga.

Carson-Newman took both the B and C doubles main draw titles. The team of Ott and Guerreiro hosed RU's duo Puentes/Siebold 8-5 in the semis before roping in an 8-4 finals victory over Lee's Yowarsky/Good.

Ledington/Cook went head-to-head with Lee's Rice/North for an 8-4 contest in the semifinals of C. The Eagle duet then battled Lee's Friedlander/Johnson for an 8-6 finals win.

"Our main objective," Coach Love said, "was to get some experience against outside competition, and we did that."

The Lady Eagles' first match of their spring season is Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. home against Young Harris.
