North Georgia hands Eagles 8-1 loss at Eagle Watch Classic

WOODSTOCK, Ga. — The Carson-Newman women's tennis team (5-9) fell to the North Georgia Nighthawks (9-8) 8-1 in the Eagle Watch Classic Wednesday afternoon.

This marks the Eagles sixth loss in a row.

"Good effort given by both men and women," coach Jean Love said following the loss. "North Georgia was just too tough today."

Nothing went right for Carson-Newman as they dropped all three doubles matches to begin its day. Mallory Jackson (Erwin, Tenn.) and Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) led off for the Eagles and fell 8-5 in the opening frame. Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) and Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.), who played at No. 2 on the day, came up short as well, losing 8-5. This marks only the second loss of the season the duo has suffered.

Singles play was no different as Guerriero was the lone Eagle to record a victory for her team when she won 6-1 and 6-3 at No. 3. Due to a lingering injury, Jackson was forced to retire after falling behind 4-1 in the opening set in first round of singles. Corsato-Owsianka then went on to last three sets in the following match, however, would lose 6-0, 4-6, 10-7.

The rest of the Carson-Newman's lineup would be put away rather quickly. Ott lost at No. 4 6-1, 6-1 in two sets and Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) came up short 6-3, 6-3 in a battle for No.5. Catherine Cook (Morristown, Tenn.) closed out the day for the Eagles, as she, too, fell to a Nighthawk.

Carson-Newman will have a chance to gain some positions in the South Atlantic Conference standings as they look ahead to Lincoln Memorial and Lenior-Rhyne this weekend as they look for their first win in three weeks
