Despite effort and energy, Eagles fall to UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- The Carson-Newman women's tennis found themselves on the losing end of a 6-3 score in favor of the University of Alabama - Huntsville Chargers despite improving significantly in a week's time.

"We gave good effort and energy but just ran into a better opponent, especially at the top of the lineup," said coach Jean Love said. "Good performances by our No. 3 doubles teams and in singles victories by Patricia (Guerreiro) and Brooke (Sanderson)."

Guerreiro (Portugal) and Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) won their singles matches 6-4, 6-2 and 7-5, 0-6, 10-8 respectively. This was an improvement for an Eagles club who were winless in singles matches in last weekend's contest with Young Harris.

Carson-Newman began the match falling behind early, 2-0, in doubles sets. Guerreiro and Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) rallied quickly to win the third set with a score of 8-6 to give the Eagles some momentum going into singles.

The Eagle's ultimately dropped four of the six singles sets to fall behind 4-2 in this segment of the match, thus compiling a 6-3 overall score at the end of the day.

"Again, this team played with good effort and good energy," Love said. "I am pleased with that."

The Eagles (1-2) return home to the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex this Friday to face off against Southern Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
