Eagles drop SAC contest to L-R 6-3

HICKORY, N.C. -- The Carson-Newman women's tennis team (5-9, 3-8 SAC) lost 6-3 in the South Atlantic Conference matchup against Lenior-Rhyne (10-10, 4-4 SAC) on Saturday afternoon.

This marks the Eagles' seventh straight loss in the past three weeks.

The Eagles started the day by taking one out of the three matches in doubles play. The victory came from the strong No. 3 pairing of Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) and Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) as they took down their Bear counterparts in quick fashion at 8-0.

Guerreiro also accounted for the second overall point Carson-Newman had on the day. She was a winner in the third round match 6-4, 6-1.

Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) rounded out the scoring for her team as she won 7-6(5) and 6-3 at No. 5.

After that, Carson-Newman couldn't muster up any more points on the score card as the remaining four singles players all lost.

Mallory Jackson (Ewrin, Tenn.) fell in the opening match 6-1, 6-2. Jill Corsto-Owsianka (Germany) followed suit with a 6-2, 6-3 loss at No. 2.

Ott competed in her first set at No. 4, but went on to lose 7-6(1) and 6-1.  Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) also fell in her singles match, 6-2, 6-4 in the sixth place match.

Coming into the day, Carson-Newman was ninth in the SAC standings and desperately in need of a win. They will need to win their final conference match against Lincoln Memorial and some help from other schools in order to make the conference tournament.

The Eagles will try it again Sunday as they host Lincoln Memorial at 1:30 p.m to make up for Friday's cancelled match at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex. The contest will also serve as Senior day for Carson-Newman's lone senior Jennifer Ott.
