Royals prevail 8-1 over Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — After coming off a narrow defeat just a day ago to Newberry, the Carson-Newman women's tennis team (5-6, 3-4 SAC) fell Sunday to the Queens Royals (8-1, 3-1 SAC) 8-1 on Mossy Creek.

"It was a rough day for us," coach Jean Love stated. "We only played well at No. 3 doubles and that momentum went to the other team. We just never recovered."

Queens was impressive throughout as they only stumbled once all day. The did not lose a match in singles play. Mallory Jackson (Erwin, Tenn.) fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 to start off the round. Jill Corsato-Owsianka then followed up with a 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-2 defeat at No. 2.

Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) had rather quick days as well, losing at No. 4 and 5 6-0, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-0 respectively. Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) was put out in one set, as she lost 8-1 at no. 6.

Most concerning news, however, comes at the no. 3 singles match. Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) was losing 2-1 early in her first set before suffering an injury that forced her to be sidelined for the remainder of the day. Guerreiro's 10 wins on the year are the most on this Eagles club.

The only victory of the day for the Eagles came prior to the injury, as Guerreiro and Ott put together an 8-3 victory for their team in doubles. This is the ninth win on the season for the duo and the second in as many days.

Carson-Newman will look to get its season back on track as they travel to conference rival Tusculum on Tuesday for a 1 p.m. match time.
