Trojans, Tornados await Eagles in SAC play

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After picking up its first win of the spring season last weekend against Mars Hill, the Carson-Newman women's tennis team (2-2, 1-0 SAC) will look to continue the good form against the Anderson Trojans (6-3, 3-2 SAC) and Brevard Tornados (1-6, 0-2 SAC).

The Eagles host Anderson at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex before traveling to the Hickory State to take on Brevard at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Carson-Newman is currently fourth in the South Atlantic Conference. Anderson is sixth and Brevard is sitting in 10th.

"This weekend will be a good test for the women. We will need to play good in doubles just like we did against Mars Hill. If we can do that, it will give us our best chance to win both conference matches," coach Jean Love said.

Love's Eagles have used doubles play to build momentum. Carson-Newman is 9-3 in the 12 sets it has played in duos. The combination of Patricia Guerrieiro (Portugal) and Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) are 4-0 as the team's primary No. 3 pairing.

The Trojans come to Mossy Creek riding a two-match losing streak in SAC play. A week and a half ago, the Trojans fell to Queens by a score of 8-1. Last Saturday, they traveled to Greeneville and lost to the Tusculum Pioneers 7-2.

Anderson sophomore Rebecca Bruning will be playing at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex as the reigning AstroTurf SAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week. Bruning picked up two singles win; this season, she is 8-1 in singles play and undefeated at 5-0 in the SAC. In doubles play, the Trojans' duo of Mairead Cleary and Lindsay Gregory are 6-3 including undefeated at 3-0 as the team's No. 1.

Brevard is currently on a three-game losing streak. They have dropped matches against Ashland, Wingate and Pfeiffer since the lone win of the season against Misercordia back on March 4th.

Brevard's top player this season has been senior Katie Daugherty. She is 3-4 as the Tornados' No. 1 player and she is a member of the team's top doubles tandem with Jule Hermann that is also 3-4. Hermann and Nirvanna Silva are the only other two Tornados that have recorded multiple wins in singles play.

Full results will be available on cneagles.com following the conclusion of both matches.
